If the game is actually made to portray the characters as actual people with a deep story you can get attached too then. If I am wrong then you still know my answer because I said what I thought about both "story games" and "eye candy games".ĮDIT I have not played Skullgirls. I typed this up with the idea that Skullgirls is just a fighting game with minimal story and doesn't go deep with the characters. Though my argument still stands for the games that aren't story heavy. (though there should be more girl centered fan service in media- sometimes the girls want mindless eye candy too and that's not a bad thing)ĮDIT I have not played Skullgirls. Tl dr no sexism in skullgirls, it's just a fighting game made to show off attractive designs and feed those who are just looking for eye candy graphics as they play and not a deep story with realistic characters, though there is the slight creepy factor with the characters who are under 18 having their measurements shown Sexism comes in when objectifying and other bad behaviors happen in real life, or are shown in fiction that is made to mirror real life in some form. If something is made to be fanservice then that's fine. Are you meant to become attached to the characters and think of them as real? If yes then if there is any objectifying it is sexism, if no then objectifying is fine. It all depends on how the game is portraying itself. Objectification is fine when it is towards something harmless but not when it is done towards a human. That is because I am a real living person. I could wear some variation (like short shorts and a tube top) of the cat girls (fortune is her name?) outfit and I would expect to not be objectified. Why does that matter? Because I am human. Though like it was said earlier that being female does not excuse sexism I would like to point out that I am a female. The children thing is a separate problem so I'll cut this short to keep this sexism focused. That's a different line that shouldn't be crossed unless the game was trying to please the pedophiles. The 16 year old isn't as creepy since she's older, but still anyone under 18 shouldn't be portrayed like that even if it is a just for fun game. What is a problem with Skullgirls is the 13 year old having measurements given. So because of that it kind of defeats the point of this question. Like I said before, I do not think the game is sexist. Would your answer change if the game had a cast exclusively made up of minstrel show blackface characters? They really didn't need to do that, but that crosses into more of a objectifying young girls and pedophile type things. What I do find a bit creepy though is that fact that the characters under 18 have their measurements given. This is actually quite normal, many anime characters are given the same thing. Yes there could be more games that don't do this but that's another problem.ĭoes the fact that the website gives the women's measurements (and, indeed, essentially has dating profiles for their bios) change anything? I think it is ok for games to do this, in a harmless way like I explained above.

No harm is being done except for those who look for it.ĭoes the answer to the above change given that more games show women this way than don't? Is it acceptable that this one game portrays women in this way?įor the type of game it is, yes. And it is directed towards those who like the female figure. It's a fighting game made to catch attention with designs not story or characters. You could make the same game but with men and it's still fine. Yes Skullgirls is a bit ridiculous with it's designs but I wouldn't call it sexist. A game made to be played with some flashy characters as eye candy? Sure! A main character who is treated like the perfect man yet goes around harassing women in the game? Bad. A story involved game where all the girls are made to be fetish fuel? Ew. In my opinion sexy-fanservice (I'll call it that to separate from other fan service forms) is perfectly fine when it is not causing problems. Skullgirls is obviously for fun, not for deep characters or a fantastic detailed story. Is it a just for fun game, or is it more of a character involved story? I think it all depends on what kind of game it is.
